 | Kalonji Seeds (Nigella Setiva) | | |
| It is a small prostrate annual herb about 45 cm high (Plate 39), 2-3 slender leaves pinnatisect, 2-4 cm long cut into linear segment, segments oblong-Ian ceo late. Flowers pale, blue on solitary long peduncles, seeds trigonous and black in color. The plant is indigenous to the Mediterranean region but now found widely in Jammu, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Assam and Punjab. The features are as below:
- In food as well as medicine
- Used as flavoring, to improve digestion and produce warmth, especially in cold climates
- They are sometimes scattered in the folds of woolen fabrics to preserve them from insect damage
- Used as a carminative, aromatic, stimulant, diuretic, anthelmintic, galactagogue and diaphoretic
- Used as a condiment in curries
- Useful in indigestion, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, dropsy, amenorrhoea and dysmenorrhoea and in the treatment of worms and skin eruptions
- Used as an antiseptic
- To arrest vomiting, seeds are roasted and given internally
- Ethno veterinary usage
- Used as a galactagogue in cases of reduced milk flow and as an antioxytocic agent during pregnancy and birthing to retain placenta
Chemical Constituents:
- Alkaloids: The major alkaloids are nigellidine, nigellicine and nigellimine
- Flavonoid glycosides: A number of quercetin and kaempferol glycosides have been isolated
- Saponins: The seeds have been reported to contain a he de ragen in saponin, melanthin and melanthigenin
- Sterols: Cholesterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, Ã-Sitosterol and a-spinastero
- Volatile oil: Thymoquinone, thymol, carvone dithymoquinone, monoterpenes including d-limonene, p-cymene and (+) citronellol have been isolated
- Fixed oil: Linoleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid are present

| We supply a wide assortment of konch (Mucuna pruriens) which is an herb widely used in as a medicinal bean and a food crop in India, West Africa, and Central America. This herb is found in bushes, hedges and dry-deciduous. It has pods which have hair-like needles covering the outside. These hairs contain mucunian and serotonin and can cause itching, blisters, and dermatitis. The hairs have been used in itching powder and mixed with honey to be used as vermifuge. |

| It is an erect, strongly scented, annual herb with compound leaves of light green color, yellow flowers and thin pointed pods. It has excellent medicinal virtues as its regular use helps keep the body clean and healthy. The following are the features of these:
- Grows up to about 30 to 80 cm in height
- The seeds are brownish-yellow and have a peculiar odor
- The leaves of fenugreek are aromatic, cooling and mild laxative
- The seeds exercise soothing effect on the skin and mucous membranes, relieving any irritation of the skin and alleviating swelling and pain
The following are the ingredients:
- Moisture: 86.1 percent
- Protein: 4.4 percent
- Fat: 0.9 percent
- Minerals: 1.5 percent
- Fiber: 1.1 percent
- Carbohydrates: 6.0 percent per 100 grams of edible portion
- The mineral and vitamin contents are calcium, iron, phosphorous, carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin C

- The mineral and vitamin contents are calcium, phosphorous, carotene, thiamine, niacin and riboflavin. Several alkaloids have been found in fenugreek seeds
- Alkaloid trigonelline and choline, essential oil and saponin
Trigonelline has highly toxic action on neuromuscular preparations. The seeds also contain fixed and volatile oil, mucilage, bitter extractive and a yellow coloring substance. Air-dried seeds contain a little amount of trigonelline and nicotinic acid. |

- Zeera pani is a refreshing and appetizing Indian drink made from cumin and tamarind water

| It is a tender low-growing herb is grown as a perennial in warm, tropical climates. There are many varieties of basil used in Italian food is typically called sweet basil, as opposed to Thai basil or holy basil, which are used in Asia. It grows to between 30 and 130 cm tall, with opposite, light green, silky leaves 3 and 11 cm long and 1 and 6 cm broad. The features are as below:
- Flowers are quite big, white in color and arranged in a terminal spike
- Recommended to be used fresh; in cooked recipes it is generally added at the last moment, as cooking quickly destroys the flavor
- The fresh herb can be kept for a short time in plastic bags in the refrigerator
