Ashwagandha Roots (Withania Somnifera)

Ashwagandha roots grows as a stout shrub that reaches a height of 170 cm and belongs to the same family, yellow flowers and red fruit, though its fruit is berry-like in size and shape. These are grown prolifically in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and are commercially cultivated in Madhya Pradesh (a province in India). Considered as a rasayana herb, it works on a nonspecific basis to increase health and longevity. Moreover, these are also considered as an adaptogen which is a nontoxic herb that works on a nonspecific basis to normalize physiological function, working on the HPA axis and the neuroendocrine system. The roots and berries of the plant are used in herbal medicine. Moreover, these are sometimes boiled in milk, prior to drying, in order to leach out undesirable constituents. These are also used as a substitute for rennet, to coagulate milk in cheese making. These are being traditionally used for the Ayurvedic system as aphrodisiacs, diuretics and for treating memory loss.

Indications:

Best known as a female rejuvanitive, it is useful for infertility, decreased libido, threatened miscarriage, menopause, and leucorrhea and has the ability to balance pH in the cervical area. Dry membranes, such as those on the vaginal wall, are also brought into balance through the herbs demulcent action. These provided men with benefit in the treatment of impotence and general sexual debility. In addition to it's applications for reproductive organs, Shatavari is also quite effective for stomach ulcers, hyperacidity and diarrhea. Dry and irritated membranes in the upper respiratory tract are soothed by this herb making it useful in cases of bronchitis and chronic fevers. It is believed to bring into balance all of the body's fluids.
